Getting a KML out of Google My Maps or Google Earth

A KML file usually comes from a Google product. Here is how to export one:

Google My Maps: open your map, click the menu next to the map name and choose export to KML/KMZ. Pick KML.

Google Earth: right-click your project or route and choose save as KML.

Got a .kmz file? That is a packed KML file. This tool only reads .kml — pick KML when exporting, or unzip the KMZ first.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a Google Maps route as GPX?

Google Maps has no GPX export of its own. Move your route to Google My Maps first, export it there as KML, and convert it to GPX on this page.

What gets lost in the conversion?

The route itself is kept. Styling such as colours, icons and descriptions doesn't exist in GPX and is dropped.

Does a KMZ file work?

No, only .kml. A KMZ is a compressed KML file: unzip it (rename .kmz to .zip if needed) and upload the .kml inside.
